Setting up spare set of wheels

i currently have a Kona Fire Mountain Deluxe which I am using to commute on each day, with that in mind I have fitted Conti Travel Contact semi slick tyres and indeed may even replace these with thinner (and slicker) tyres. However at weekends I would like the option of using the bike more for what it is intended, on some trails. Rather than changing the tyres every Friday I am thinking of getting some spare wheels to pop on for my weekend jaunts. For ease I am going to get a duplicate cassette to the one I have (Deore 11-32) and the wheels I will look at some Mavics, however I am unsure what to do about Brake rotors as these are a new thing to me. The bike has hayes MX-4s fitted at the moment with 6 inch rotors, can I buy any 6 inch rotors (with the correct number of bolts) or do they have to be a particular type, sorry for what may seem a dumb question but there are so many different types and shapes on the market.

Thanks in advance for your help

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Unless you use your spare wheels every weekend you could run into the problem of different wear on the cassettes so they will not run smoothly with the chain as it wears together with your slick wheel commuting set.You could also need to swap the chain as well which seems a bit of a faff.

How long does it take to change over the tyres? maybe 5 -10 minuets max per wheel? .It might be a lot easier and cheaper just to swap the tyres back and forth when you want to go weekend riding.

As long as you change your chain when it gets worn (use a chain checker) then you shouldn't have an issue. You may need to start off with fresh cassettes and a new chain though (depending on how much use the current combination has had)

I do the same with my 'cross bike- a couple sets of wheels with different tyres on them for different conditions.

6 inch rotors, or to be more precise, 160 mm, I believe are interchangeble.

you should have no problem with diameter nor I think thickness. You may have issue with the rotors being centred in the caliper so end up with one of the pads rubbing. If you have IS mounts then you would need to fit shims - fiddly and time consuming or with post mount, undo the bolt and adjust the position of the caliper.

if you have same hubs and rotors, then that should not be an issue.

Thanks guys for the replys

I had not considered the issue of chain wear and that I may need a new chain as well, with that in mind and also trying to save the pennies for a road bike I think I will go with cyberknight and the tyre changes. This will also give me the excuse to get a maintenance stand! Thanks also for the advice on rotors, will be handy if I need to replace them.

Cheers

I can't answer the rotor question.

However, I have 3 (yes three) sets of wheels that I use in my bike and I've never had any issues with chains and cassettes, so I'd ignore this nonsense.

Just make sure you never run a worn out chain with any of the cassettes (ie. change the chain fairly frequently - I change my chain once per year; approx 2500 miles)

changing tyres over every week will be a right pain in the arse - hence my three sets of wheels.
