I feel the same way about Shakespeare as I do about the Beatles. Academically interesting, I appreciate their innovation and contribution to the culture, and I accept that many of the things I do love are directly descended from their work, but there's no way I would choose to actually listen to them.
That said, it's not true to say that without Shakespeare / The Beatles, there would be no ...whatever... Somebody would have come along and innovated in a similar way, it's just progress and you can't stop it.

Unfortunately it is treated with far too much reverence in schools and not enough history: Shakespeare was a street artist, for goodness sakes, living by his wits; large chunks of his material were taking the serious p*ss, and at least one entire play was probably propaganda to curry favour with the new monarch.
Knowing the historical context makes it much more approachable, and a lot funnier.
That said, most of the Shakespeare I had to read was during my Theatre Studies training and was sandwiched between the other 'Great' playwrights: compared to them Shakespeare is positively exciting: at least his stories have a plot.

The plays can be hard work, but Shakespeare has to be admired for coining very many phrases now in everyday use.
This piece by Bernard Levin strung a few together:

Macbeth, The Tempest and The Merchant of Venice are all tremendous works. I studied them for A level English lit.They were taught and interpreted for us tremendously by excellent teachers, I got an 'A' grade, and they have all stayed with me ever since. Seen them all at the theatre since then too.
