The presenter was 'soft as shite', but it added to the programme as it highlighted just how 'hard' a life at sea is.


I'd run a very long way if asked to work at sea....

Great song but not really a shanty, more a ballad (apparently).

My father used to sing this one to me , aged three, and made me promise not to repeat it at nursery school.. "My father was the keeper of the Eddystone light"...

We've got a book about the Stephensons who built many of Britain's lighthouses. They actually went out to the rocks and laboriously chiselled a flat circle on the rock for the foundations before starting work on the actual tower, which was assembled from granite carved on shore. There are several incidents of workers being stranded and drowned in storms.
