I was thinking today about the idea of a 'shared bike' scheme. A friend at work has decided to buy an expensive camera with a friend and share the costs, and that got me thinking about the idea of buying a bike between two people (a specialist bike - perhaps a tourer). You'd half the costs, and with careful planning you'd both be able to use it at your leisure.

I'd love a tourer, and a mountain bike, as well as a road bike..... but would need a lot of spare cash, and secondly a lot of space to store them. Sadly I have neither. A shared bike between 2 (or more people maybe) would get round this.

It would probably would have to be a friend, or someone you could trust fully or maybe someone in a cycling club.

Has anyone ever done this?

I worked with 2 girls that were good friends and also flat mates. They decided to buy a car together that they would 'share', for the same financial reasons.

They're still friends, but the car lasted about 4 months. It would be very testing as there are bound to be times when you both wanted it. You would have to do it with a really close friend for it to work, IMO, and if you were that close, would you not want to go cycling together?

If i did that knowing my luck id get it on the rainy days ;) have keep changing set up etc n agree with jamie bout riding 2gether. What happens with repairs who pays? Think it would b more hassle than its worth imo

I can't imagine anything more horrid or a better way to break up a friendship and as mentioned surely you'd rather ride with a cycling friend than share a bike.

If you have half the money you need to buy the bike(s) you want, just plan to save twice as long.
