Shared footpath/cyclepath conflict

For a few months now I have been getting more than my fair share of p******s on the Whitby to Scarborough cycle route, always on the same sections, namely just north of Stainsacre and also in the vicinity of Fylingthorpe. I am not the only one this is happening to either. Yesterday I decided to don my walking boots and part of my route took me along those sections of the track. I took particular notice of the surface and cleared away several pieces of bramble etc and when I returned a couple of hours later there were more scattered around. so it looks like a deliberate thing so if you pass this way , beware.

As a walker and a cyclist, what annoys me with shared footpaths like the one you are talking about is that at certain times of the year they are not suitable for bikes.

By not suitable I mean absolutely ideal for MTBs but totally unsuitable for the track itself. We are at that time of the year where the ground is thawing out and getting soft. If you run a few MTBs along it, it can dig deep ruts in the footpath which will stay there all year and make it useless for walkers and not much use for cyclist for the rest of the year.

I dont know if that is the case here but I can see how it would annoy not only walkers but other cyclists who are not MTBers. But putting brambles on a path will not stop MTBers.

It was happening up here on route 72 a few years ago at newburn and wylam, it went on for monthsand nobody was ever caught ! Doug Ridgeway our sustrans warden spent days sweeping a 4 mile section and picked up over 5000 tacks!

Bad enough if you get a puncture, but these divs that put these things there don't consider that kids could fall on them or that people will be walking their dogs along it and it will puncture them too.

Most often around here these idiots are retired nimbys with nothing better to do than whine about bins being put out too early, cyclists, dogs, children, motorists, the postman..... the list goes on.

They should either take their whining to the relevant authority, form some sort of governed community speed watch scheme, shut up and get a hobby or hurry up and die, either option will make the world a better place.

That's a shame. I've ridden that route a couple of times - it's a lovely route though the track is awful in places.

Had they been put there to make a muddy section of a path easier to walk over? In some of the places I walk - not cycle routes - people put branches across muddy stretches to make them less muddy.

Though it wouldn't usually be brambles. And I'd have to be fairly desperate for fun to be tearing up brambles & throwing them around without wearing gardening gloves.

I know the type you mean.... I have a few I know that will grumble at anything, and they even get cross if you go out of your way to avoid them.... They then go out of their way to make sure they can grumble..... This week it was the one known as the wicked witch of the hill, she complains if you stop near her house as it disturbs her dog.... You live in a city train your dog not to bark at people going by your house.

I've told Mr Summerdays to bump me off if I turn into a crotchet old hag like that one! Most of the people I meet are wonderful, and I have lots of little conversations with delightful older people so I know it's perfectly possible to not turn into an old grump!
