Shaun has just posted some advice about how to choose your thread titles to get the best possible results on Google. That reminded me to check how I had done with one of my threads from earlier in the year ...

Some time ago I started a thread to explain a solution that I had come up with for an annoying bug in some mapping software that I use. I know about the importance of choosing keywords in titles so I chose mine carefully.

Previously, no solution to the problem could be found by searching on Google. (I had tried and so had lots of other people.) Now, my thread often comes up number one in the Google results. For example Google for 'Memory Map blank squares bug'.

Cool! :becool:

Third page of results. First page all seems to be from the manufacturer

You'll have it stored on your viewing history.

That's very odd ... I'm not logged in to Google. I'll try other browsers ... It still gives me the same result on Internet Explorer, which I have never used before on this laptop! The only way that Google could be working out who I am and what I have searched for before is by my IP address.

I just found THIS article about stopping Google giving personalised search results. I tried it and I STILL see my result as number one!

I'll try searching from my phone when I am not at home this afternoon and see what results THAT gives me.

Google it

Here! (He has been spamming CycleChat with duplicate posts. Somebody should report him to the moderators, but I'm too scared to do it!)
Lol, despite that I missed them all. I read CC mostly via "watch threads" and "new posts" and as he hasn't allowed replies to any of those posts and I didn't happen to click "new posts" at exactly 10.44 last night I missed it.

(as the posts are pinned I guess I would have stumbled upon them eventually)

Yorkshire's only just got broadband, give it time!
Ha ha ...

Actually, I was thinking just the other day that I finally got broadband in 2003. It was only about 2 Mb/s but it was 50 times faster than the lowly 40 kb/s I typically achieved on dial-up.

We have only just got 4G on O2 here in the Calder Valley. I am pretty impressed with it, downloads being slightly faster than my home Internet but uploads being about ten times faster.
