as most of you won't know, i often ride through coventry's shared use subways, today i couldn't be bothered to whistle (my usual warning of approach) and instead chose to melodically call out "ding ding" trying to not quite sound like a bike bell.

as i went down the ramp into the subway i called out "ding ding" and then as I started on the up ramp i saw two young ladies (early to mid 20's i guess) one of whom was in the cycle lane and so called out again "ding ding" to which she replied "ding ding?" rather confused

as i nipped past I called back "i know, I've been meaning to get a bell" and carried on

ah well, thats my morning amusement I guess. ;)

She clearly wasn't the full shilling.

I would have got it as would most people.

Like the assistant at my newsagents.
I asked for a copy of Cycling Weekly. I told her ....''That's what I do...........cycle weakly''

Not a glimmer of understanding.
Just looked at me like I had exposed myself.
The woman next to me thought it was funny though.

I often say ring ring in a gentle manner when meeting older peds. A couple of weeks ago I "ring ring" as normal, no reaction, tried it again. Bovine ped looked round then looked forward again but refused to do anything about their wandering dog. Ring Ring obviously wasn't going to work so I tried "If you can't control the bitch I may have to kick her out of the way". The dog obligingly moved to the side. The bitch seemed offended.

I had a squeaky penguin on my MTB. Pretty useless as a warning to pedestrians as a squeaky toy is not a noise they associate with "please mind out, cyclist about".

Quite a few of them would look around in the hedgerows as they thought it was some kind of bird noise. Telling them in all honesty that it was a penguin used to make me smile.

I have a bell and Air Zound fitted on both my rides (Recumbent Trikes both) and the bell works most of the time. When it doesn't the Zound will give a gentle Parp, if that doesn't work then a full on blast from the Zound is very hard to ignore.

I find the Zound is good if you use it from a long way back too.
