Shimano 105 ST-5600 Shifters finish

The lacquer has (sort of) blistered/flaked.
I'm guessing that a fine/high grit paper would do the job in removing the blemished finish.
Any pointers / advice?

Start with a 120 grit sandpaper to get the finish off, then slowly go up to 800 grit where you should be wet sanding. Once you've got that all done, use a metal polishing compound and a cotton rag.

Once you've got it shiny then I'd apply a new laquer coat.
