Thinking of getting it for my next road build next year. Does anybody know the release date and if it's been upgraded in tech compared to the older version?

Thanks.

Alex.

Have a look here; http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/shimano-sora-and-tourney-2013-first-look-33204/

It's going 9-speed with shifters on the lever, as per Tiagra, etc.

So is 2013 Sora effectively the same as 2011 Tiagra?

looks forward 10 years to entry-level Dura-Ace...

2012 Sora is already 9 speed, 2300 is the only 8 speed group now. Tiagra went 10 speed. My 22 year old 7 speed Shimano rapid fire STI stuff on the MTB still shifts perfectly, so I woudn't worry too much about numbers. If a 2012 bike with Sora is a couple of hundred quid cheaper than a 2013 bike I'd rather trouser the cash.

Yes - it's what they tend to do.

I recently bought a new Ultegra front dérailleur, which replaced a 2 year old version which was much bulkier in design. When I compared to a Dura-Ace from last year, it was the same, apart from the cage being riveted at the rear rather than having a screw, and the spring being made from a slightly different material. It's clearly cheaper for them to move a design down the range, but make it a bit cheaper, rather than each year construct a completely new design for each model.

It's exactly the same as the way computer parts get replaced with faster bits of kit and the older stuff drops in price. Don't think of it as waiting 10 years for current Dura Ace to filter through, think of it as getting 10 year old Dura Ace now with all the kinks and teething problems ironed out through years of real world testing ;)

I don't fully understand why people dislike the thumb shifters myself. I have 2300 kit on two bikes and I actually like the simplicity of it. Then again I can reach both buttons from the drops as well.

I think the big new change to Sora for me is the switch-able cable-pull in the levers. This will allow v-brakes to be used with drop bars. I'm rather interested in that setup for my tourer

That must be it, cos I too have never had a problem with the thumb shifters, and in fact quite like them
