Shimano Sora 3500 compatibility?

I'm looking to change my rear mech and was wondering if anyone has used the Sora 3500 on a similar setup. I'm running a triple 30-40-52 on the front and an 8 speed 12-26 cassette on the rear. According to the spec the ss cage can accommodate up to 37t total (my setup being 36).
I was quite surprised about this as I was expecting to have to use the gs cage. Can anyone confirm that the ss will work with my setup? (Preferably someone who's using it already).

Second option is an Ultegra RD-6600 GS (medium cage) I think I may have to replace the jockey wheels to better accommodate my 8 speed chain though.

I don't know the answer to your question, sorry! But, are you aware that Sora 3500 is 9 speed rather than 8 speed? I would expect that if you go to Sora 3500 you will also need to swap out your current cassette and chain.

I think we have already covered this in another thread, i run the sora mech with no issues on an 8 speed cassette and chain.

Sorry, I was referring to the Sora 3500 shifters, agree that the mech would be okay - i had missed that this was specific to only the mech being swapped, not the shifters too.

Do you have a similar setup to mine? (12-26 rear, 30-42-52 front) if so did you go for the short or medium cage?

run a 12-26 with a 50/34 compact double and i went for the short cage ,listed as a max capacity of 27 teeth but i reckon you could push it a tooth or more if needed.

Is there much left in the cage with it on the biggest cogs front and back? I have a cupboard full of stuff I've bought for various bikes then changed my mind (Topeak wedge bag in large, medium, small and micro for example - settled on the small eventually) it would be nice to get it right first time just once

plenty of adjustment on the b screw , should be close to the largest cog anyway.

Here you go, chain+ cassette are less than a month old but in need of a clean ,lots of room left on the b screw.

Looks good, thanks for all your efforts. I've just ordered a Shimano 2300 (because I know for sure it'll fit), a Sora 3500 because it should fit and it looks better and an Ultegra 6600 GS because it looks even sexier.
One of them will definitely be going on my bike

Well the Sora turned up today from Ribble. Unwrapped it and found it scratched right across the main body (where it shows) so that was a waste of £19!

It wasn't even in it's original packaging, just a heat sealed plastic bag.

I won't be using them again

The nearest post office is miles away and the wrapping would need to be replaced as I had to rip it to get it open. I'll keep it as an emergency spare but won't be using Ribble again.
There's always the chance that something can get damaged in the post but that's not what happened here, the mech must have been wrapped already scratched. The lack of any Shimano packaging, just a plain heat sealed plastic bag and a strip of paper with the type of mech printed on it, makes me wonder if it is new stock or just an item removed from a bike and sold.
It's the sort of thing I'd expect from a dodgy eBay seller not a legitimate shop.

Contact them even if you are keeping it. You might get some money back or they might arrange collection and replacement at their cost.
