Happy for this to be moved, is a bit of a niave question though.

I have started the voyage of discovery re: cycle shoes, cleats and pedals. Loads of info on here and similar places about the technicalities of the variations but.... is it down to the web to buy from?
I can understand the logistical problem of storing loads of sizes in loads of flavours etc. but how do you try before you buy or is it down to paying the return cost of a number of pairs of shoes until you find the best fit etc.
I see that there are very few manufacturers who agree what a size 10 is foreinstance, I gather Shimano you go up a size, others are too narrow for most and some offer the wide toe box described again variously as maxi, high volume, etc.
My first foray sends me in the direction of BTwin due in part to reviews I've read, guess I'm stuck with the postage cost for returning until I find what I am looking for.
Dorset btw! If there is such a thing as a well stocked national outlet.

I go to a bricks and mortar shop to buy all my shoes, cycling or otherwise.
