My commute is only 1.85 miles , And i was just thinking , Does anyone deliberately extend their commute to get extra miles under their belt ??

Every single day come rain or shine. Normal commute is a 24 mile round trip. I extend it to a 32 mile round trip.

My commute is usually around 6 miles round into Uni from my flat and back.

Depending on how late I am I sometimes take a longer route but tbh the weather the past few months has just made me want to get it done as quickly as possible.

My direct commute round trip would only be 8 miles but my "normal" winter commute round trip is 15 and 20 miles, when it warms up abit it will be more than that, especially after I have received my new sunny day only bike.

When it is fine I turn my 5 mile each way commute into a 14miler on the way home...a bit of a cheat because it does avoid quite a big hill.
In the morning while I am still soaking up caffeine it is the most direct route, but the long way home helps de-stress too.

Yea my 5 mile can turn into a brisk 17, home time commute only tho.

My first commute was a massive 0.75miles. I don't think I ever extended that just rushed home got changed and went out for a proper ride

Thinking about my old commute again it was too short IMO (about 3.2miles oneway) I extended it a few times but again I much preferred to get home get changed and go out on a faster/ lighter bike.

The commute before that was 17.5miles oneway; I dont think it was extended much at all as I was living at home and didn't want to be late for my tea  It was modified at one point to include a extra couple of miles but on better surface, so the overall time was the same; just more enjoyable.

My direct commute would be about 10-miles but the shortest-fastest is about 12-miles - which I do going home.

In the mornings I typically take a rather less direct, but more enjoyable, route of 22 to 24-miles.

I guess it depends upon why you commute by bike. My primary reason is that I like cycling and doing it as a commute is the best way of it being part of my normal day-to-day life without using up lots of time. Cycling as a means of transport, saving money, not using a car etc is all secondary to me.

My commute is only a 5 mile round trip so I occasionally extend it and find a different hill to stomp up to get the legs going. Come summer I will hopefully be incresing the number of long rides home.

I live in Nottingham and work in Mackworth near Derby and my short commute is:

Home -> Nottingham Station (about 1 mile); Derby Station -> Work (about 4 miles), so about 5 miles total

If I'm feeling adventurous on my way home (haven't done this on my way in yet) I go:

Work -> Home (about 20 miles)

What I've been doing recently is getting the train one stop further down the line on my way in and getting off at the same station on my way back so I can get more miles in - and it only adds about 5-10 mins onto my commute time:

Home -> Beeston Station (about 5 miles); Derby Station -> Work (About 4 miles) so about 9 miles total
Work -> Derby Station; Beeston Station -> Home (another 9 miles)

Last week I rode 120 miles which I feel pretty happy about!

Long term aim would be to do the full 20 miles there and back every day, giving me a total 40 mile round trip five days a week! Not sure if that's pushing it a bit though! Don't want to bust my knees and/or heart riding my bike!

My commute is only 2.5 miles but up a large hill homeward bound.

Only ever extend it in summer time, riding in the dark is purely about getting from a to b for me.
