Having only a passing interest in the professional side of cycling, I had to google Swift and Sky as there was implied significance in your posting.

I wouldn't recognise the chap and hence be unable to determine if he was a replica kit wearer or a genuine team rider. I suspect the vast majority of the population would also be unable to identify any professional riders other than the big hitters like Wiggins, Froome and Trott and hence not care about the legitimacy of the right to wear replica kit of any description.

Now if I wore a Sky replica kit it would bring a whole new meaning to 'expansive sky'

Yep, I wouldn't always recognise some of the lesser known riders, but Ben Swift comes from Dinnington, which is just a few miles down the road. He's crops up on 'Look North' occasionally. I've seen him training around Sheffield's hills a couple of times.

why not? the reason they get sold on a open market is for amatuers. its how the suppliers/sponsers make their money

The thing with replica kits is that they are normally very good quality and can be had for a good price, especially if its last years version. If you like the design then go for it. Folk who really care about what others wear must have pretty uninteresting lives.
