Being fat is socially unacceptable. You are barely considered for jobs and have to rely on local outbreaks of black death to get a job you are (over)qualified for. Social exlusion is a big factor in a fat person's life. Which means having the fridge as your only friend in life. The fridge and the sofa. Real friendship.

I have been getting NHS treatment against my own obesity and social exlusion is the norm among the obesity patients. For most of us, life is something we observe from a far distance.

But obesity is treatable..... by every individual. It is a lifestyle gone mad illness. I don't have any excuses for my obesity and neither am I a victim. I just have to get on with it. But as it is now; I am socially exluded. It is down to me to get socially included again.

Thank you for your reply, its makes interesting reading... I genuinley wish you the very best of luck with that challenge. Have you found the exclusion element to be one of the biggest motivators to making a change...or have there been other, more powerful contributions (please don't feel a need to elaborate if its personal).

I mentioned in a previous post, what if it was a genetic problem?

Then I would suspect the person suffering from a genetic disposition to obesity... is one in a million.

But in the long run, would it not be great to know that our grandchildren would need no encouragement to make good food choices, simply because it is socially unacceptable to not do so and that firms that supply bad choices will fail immedialtey

We're moving steadily towards that situation with smoking. This has been achieved by various means, but discriminating against smokers in the workplace isn't one of them.

Fair play to you for having the courage to say this, and good luck in your battle. Hope things work out for you.

Can I just ask - should being a bigoted moron be socially unacceptable too?
How about being a judgemental prick?

i would hope neither are.

for the record, before you jump to any conclusions (perhaps I'm too late)I also I hope I am neither.

I am asking a question, you don't yet know my opinion of the question I am asking. I want to hear others opinions, I want to see if they match my own or perhaps even change it... but you have simply made an assumption that you already know my opinion.

how so?.

Are you sure, I've witnessed plenty of discrimination against smokers in my workplaces.

Tens of reasons, really. Bikeriding being one of the strongest reasons. The physical ability to do longer bikerides is something that motivates me. But yes, social acceptance and inclusion is another motivation too. Another reason is that I do not want to die before I am 45 years old. Long life is a strong motivation. The wish for less pain from heartburn and the arthritis too is a motivator.

In short; I want to be able to do things and stuff the obesity is preventing me from doing. And that motivation is strong.

If obesity becomes social acceptable, I seriously fear for our future. NHS will get hammered and so will our ability to care for the elderly, run businesses and generally do the jobs that makes Great Britain function. In short; obesity must never ever become socially acceptable. Neither should these loose 20 lbs in a week diets too which makes you put on 25 lbs the second week. The amount of frauds we have to suffer is not tolerable. Good, sensible logical programmes is the only solution.

Obesity should be frowned upon, if only to encourage those who happen to be obese to do something about it
I personally put a lot of the blame on the food industry. Many people choose convenience food because of poor education and also economic reasons ( in their eyes )
Local butchers, greengrocers etc are becoming a thing of the past and the processed food that many people opt for is usually loaded with excessive amounts of salt and sugar.

Self-righteousness should be made socially unacceptable. What business is it of mine how much somebody else weighs? It might not be good for somebody's health, but there are plenty of pursuits that carry a health risk and might be " a burden on the NHS" (how I dislike that expression). Anyway, obesity isn't going to become socially unacceptable. Smoking did because the anti-tobacco lobby pulled a rabbit from the hat, the concept of passive smoking harming the innocent. I don't think that "passive eating" is going to be a winner.

Slowmo, I disagree, I think it will become unnaceptable. I recall when we lived in Sweden some 18 years ago, it certainly was there and I don't doubt it'll happen here.
