Riding around Singapore is pretty good. Mostly flat and it rains a lot so you need to be sorted kit wise. We have showers at work and without them commuting wouldn't be an option due to the humidity. The first day that I cycled to work a few years ago my boss asked me if I had swum into work - and it wasn't raining that day. There are some cycle routes, but they stop/start a lot where they cross roads, so most cyclists use the road a lot. I don't find the road too dangerous but busses are a menace as they roar past at 40 knots about a foot from your right hand. I have bashed on many bus windows and shouted at the drivers about their driving. I am lucky in that I can take a route to work that is 8miles in a park and just 2mies on the road.

I think that I am going to buy the sirrus with flat bars for the commute then also buy a second hand racing bike for some of the longer weekend rides around the island. My missus will probably demand a new treader as well though, so all in all my new bike is likely to become three new bikes - not that is a huge rate of inflation.

Drops will also give you more hand positions.

I used to ride to work on a hybrid with flat bars. After gradually increasing my commute distance, to occasionally doing a full 20 mile journey home, the fixed hand position of flat bars would get uncomfortable fast, and putting bar ends on was only a limited help because I didn't like having my hands out so wide. I ended up fitting bullhorn style bars (couldn't afford to change brakes and shifters to drop style!) which was excellent.

I'd seriously consider a bike with drops. A modern cyclocross or tourer type will also likely give you top levers as well as on the hoods so you can still ride flat bar style when you want.

What's it like riding around singapore btw?

how about one of these ... brenda 003.jpg

I like the look of the boardman bikes and they get a good writeup. But can't find one to test here so would need to buy without trying which I am not keen on. I have some bits arriving from chain reaction in the next few days so when I have them i'llbe down the shop to buy the specialized methinks.
