Mod note:

The thread is getting a little too heavy for the Cafe. Some comments have been removed or edited to tone things down and I'm willing to thread ban anyone who can't make their points without making it personal from here onwards.

Please keep it civil.

Well, it was suggested some pages back that the thread get moved ... this is hardly a Cafe subject.
Yes, you did suggest it. However those who would like a more robust discussion of the issue already have options here, here, here, here and here.

The title and the first post in this thread suggest that it was intended to be more light hearted take on the subject so as already requested can everyone please keep it civil from here on.

Thanks.

If the country decides to vote to leave the EU is the pound likely to suddenly drop significantly against the euro? Just wondering if I should change the money for our summer tour before the referendum just in case, I'm assuming the pound is unlikely to strengthen much either way it goes?
Probably not. It could go either way, and there could be other factors which could cause the Euro to fall. Swings and roundabouts, and highly paid experts with all the technology and research in the world struggle to get it right (I worked in the city for ten years).

Still think it is the great unknown, I've failed to be won over by either sets of arguments.

So does it not stand to reason that if we had not been in the EU & had our own border controls & could decide who could reside here there could be up to 358,000 less people here?

2 million have emigrated from the UK to the EU. Of those, all the ones who've gone to Spain I'm really glad to get rid of. Immigration's great, as anyone from Liverpool will tell you.

What would be even better is if we could get rid of Boris and Ian Duncan Smith.

You don't consider the 184,000 significant? The fact that it was 174,000 the previous year is relevant how? Should this be a new norm? It's Ok, because migration from the EU is only adding an extra million people per five years (assuming similar rate of growth, which would be rash, since it's likely to increase massively).

Nope. Why do you? Do you not understand what the figures actually represent?

Yes, it represents nearly 16 x the figure of 20,700 net migrants, which the Conservatives promised as a cap for net annual migration. In fact, the year on year increase, which the ONS considers now "not statistically significant" is pretty much equivalent to what they promised to cap net migration at.

Why, what do you think the figures represent? A reasonable and sustainable population growth in a country well prepared with infrastructure and housing stock to accept a 0.5% increase in population (based purely on net migration) per annum?

I wouldn't buy Euros as a speculative adventure. Some people say that you should invest in some kind of unit trust that has a large European component. The price is likely to be quite low immediately before the referendum due to "market nervousness". If we vote to stay In, the price should rise sharply and you cash in.
Well, that's one view anyway.
They might take the chance to have a go and raise the euro against the pound though.
The naughty step so to speak.

What "mass immigration" is that then? Care to explain?

Sorry - still waiting for some relevant facts. When Nigel Fromage and his chums cone up with some, perhaps you could post them?

I posted the link to the ONS figures in response to your message above (top). If you can't see how the ONS figures represent relevant facts, as per your last message, I'm afraid I can't help you.

I don't know anybody called Nigel Fromage, perhaps you are mistaken, or confused, but I'd suggest that the ONS figures, although probably way underestimating the reality, should suffice for you!

Do enjoy your evening, I do hope that this clarification helps!

It's your interpretation of them that is questionable...

HTH!

Have a good evening... I'm on the Chateau Musar.

Aha, I thought so. That explains everything Hope it's a good year anyway!

Hope you let it breathe for a good while first, or decanted. Is it a recent bottle (07/08), or one you had laid down?

I must confess, it's not one I knew, must try it sometime. Thanks for the heads-up!
