We have a pool company car that I use the most as have to visit other sister sites often.

The Admin Manager's own car (shitty Rover) is in the workshop as the head gasket gone. She therefore asked the Directors if she could use the pool car to save hiring one. No problem there even though she's nabbed it for over 4 weeks.

However, this woman smokes like a trooper and wears the most vile, strong perfume. I've just used the car and I've nearly puked over the wheel. It absolutely stinks of fags and the Avon's Own smellies. It was pissing down with snow so didn't want the window wide open but it was a no-brainer. She obviously smokes in the car with the windows shut. There's also ash everywhere.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it against the law to smoke in Company vehicles?

Yes it is illegal to smoke in a company vehicle or anything with a company logo on.

Could one perhaps report the condition of the car without referring to said person?

I think that'd be my approach. One might think of it as grassing/ratting but the simple fact is that this person is being selfish; putting her own desires ahead of others. In her own car, fair enough but not in a vehicle intended for all employees. If you decide not to report could you at least consider letting rip in her office?

She's a right miserable cow to be honest and I'm not very good at confrontation. I could let it slip to the company PA as if you want the Directors to know anything, she's the one to tell ;) I agree that it's really selfish and that's exactly the kind of person she is.
I will sleep on it ..... and it looks like I'll be sleeping in the office by the way the weather's going.

Leave a bag of dog shoot in the car if you know she's going to borrow it.

Good idea. I shall wait until Ellie has been wormed and then collect the deposits! Trouble is, Ms X uses it to come to and from work, so that means I would have to carry the turd bag to work.

Why not just write an anonymous note not in your usual handwriting and slip it under the door of the MD's office?

Still grassing though isn't it? It's a shame because it is was a lovely motor.

I was thinking that when she has finally finished with it (ie, the penny drops that maybe she isn't really giving the garage any hassle to get hers back on the road and is continuing to enjoy the free fuel), I will ask that it is valetted and refuse to travel between sites in my own car until it is done.

Surely there is some kind of booking system for using the car, or a "keeper of the keys" responsible for keeping tabs on vehicle use. Just tell them that someone has been smoking in the car. It isn't grassing, just stating a fact.

In Scotland there has to be a prominent "no smoking" sign displayed in the workplace, and details of who to contact if this is being flouted. If there is something similar where you work, tell the designated person. Again, you wouldn't be grassing, just following company procedure.

There is no need to be underhand, sly or conmfrontational. Just be straightforward.

There's nothing underhand or sly about slipping a note under the MD's door. Just means you'd rather keep yourself to yourself and let the company deal with it without you getting involved.

Alternatively, you could ask her straight out without being confrontational, but then some people will take things the wrong way, no matter how you say it to them.

Perhaps I'm being dense, but why not go to her and simply ask her politely not to smoke in the car, as others have to use it. Don't get involved in a discussion in which she denies it, just leave it at that.

The direct approach often works.

I'd second that. And buy some Febreeze or whatever it's called.
