Should I have my dog put down?

As an animal lover and an owner of an 8 year old Border Terrier i can fully empathize with yello and his problem, what i find a little disturbing is each time i log onto this forum this thread is the first i see, which as an animal lover find upsetting, i am pretty sure Mr Yello completely awash with enough information to make an informed decision ..its his choice and his choice only..ENOUGH IS ENOUGH PLEASE..

To be fair to all of us, if you're going to post a thread with this title in the cafe section, it's hardly surprising it sparks a health-y debate!

infinitely debatable assertion. i would in the first instance refer to the previous post to yours in which it's putatively plausible for dogs to both know and sense such distinctions. A second observation which seems self-evident is that if the awareness of one's imminent fate is a distinguishing factor in whether they should be put to sleep, then at what age is it appropriate to put an annoying child down, say if you couldnt handle your parental duties any more?

Get rid, yello. Having looked at the other thread I don't think the dog is suitable for you, through no fault of your own.

I am amazed at the sentimentality shown towards animals/dogs by some people on this thread. They are the type of people who would beggar themselves keeping a sick animal alive and in pain when it would more humane to put it down (not suggesting you are like this). Blimey, you British. If this was a French forum there would have been only one reply: "Shoot it".
No I am not a pet owner and won't be one in the future either.

well, as the arch-enemy of sentimentalism who's just beggared himself (again!) keeping a cat alive, it falls to me, perhaps by way of excusing myself, to say that I see no harm in lavishing affection on animals, even if you do realise that the 'relationship' is fundamentally skewed.
