Chris Hoy's issue just not about lycra but wearing team kits.

People keep saying that, but it's not reflected in what he wrote

I do find it odd that it's looked on very much as a fashion thing.... why has no-one mentioned that lycra shorts (in particular) are practical and happen to work very well for cycling. Which is why they exist. I sure as hell don't wear them thinking I've turned into a catwalk model - I wear them so as to not cripple my tender bottom when on a long ride

Probably because other clothes are practical and happen to work very well for cycling and there are better ways "to not cripple my tender bottom when on a long ride" but it's largely fashion that has driven the recent view that padded lycra is the One True Way and sprung or padded saddles are to be ridiculed.

What does annoy me is that you can buy a perfectly good running t shirt in a Lycra type material for about a tenner but make it a bit longer at the back and add 3 pockets and suddenly it is fifty quid
