Aaah the testing ground for land rover, aston martin and jaguar.

Good area to spot the latest from each company, i believe the latest jaguar XFR was spotted on various occasions around gaydon.

There's nothing to see here. Move along now, move along.

Yes, I know.

But if YOU got off the train at Solihull and needed to ride your bike to Knowle ( and used this mapping site to plan you're route ), it would take you along the 70 limit bypass uphill with cars merging from the left at 70 and Land Rover transporters rolling past you within reach of your right hand.

Even I don't ride there.

I may be talking at cross purposes here, but I thought that the idea of sites like these is that YOU put your route in, not that they choose it for you.

I know he has yet to announce it, but I am waiting for the Jimbo mapping site to come online. Not sure where he is getting all his route data from, but it is bound to include all the shortcuts known to cyclists and exclude all roads that are unsafe to ride on. The value of unsafe varies for each rider, but it will use the latest DoT accident figures to guide us.

I went in the gaydon test track, and as soon as we were met by security they said 'No cameras, if we see you with one, they will be taken off you and destroyed, you have been warned' lol!

I wouldn't use this tool to give me a route - that's not what it is there for:

"Mapometer.com (short for mapping pedometer) is an international site providing runners, cyclists and walkers with an easy way to measure the distances of their runs, jogs, rides, walks and hikes using Google maps. It also provides training logs, altitude and elevation measuring and the ability to share routes. Used by athletes worldwide as a tool to train for marathons, half-marathons and triathlons and occasional joggers, mountain bikers and sports men and women to see how far they are going and keep fit. "

Of course there are people who are stupid enough to use a tool beyond its limitations and complain when they drive their car into a stream/field/quarry, but that's not the tool's fault.

Do you think the route will hug the gutter?;)

I don't have to publish a cycle route guide. ;)

http://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/transport/walkingandcycling/maps/

Here's the link I sent to Mrs Fry, who was needing to ride through Tamworth centre.

It shows the cycle paths and dual-use thoroughfares useful for both locals AND visitors.

Solihull has a similar map available at the Town's Info centre, which shows the dual-use overbridge for cyclists to avoid going on the 70 limit by-pass.

When I planned my LEJOG, there were a few places where none of the internet maps knew about a bike path to cut out a busy road junction.
The local councils knew about them. A bit of web surfing and I modified my route to keep away from traffic hot-spots.;)

Here's Jimbo's test. It never fails.

Notes.
I set the software to 'running'.

1/ It takes me down Solihull By-pass, where there's NO FOOTPATH.

2/ It takes me round the M42 junction gyratory, where's there's NO FOOTPATH.

3/ It DOESN'T know there is a footpath overbridge which joins the two closed ends of the old Warwick Road.

4/ It's NOT the shortest route.

5/ If I select 'cycling' it still takes me counterclockwise round the M42 junction gyratory.

All in all, It's useless.

They use similar software to map our journey at work when we claim expenses. Sending us the wrong way down roads and cutting through barriers on dual carriageways as there is a road of the other side of the dual carriageway.
They skank me out of a mile everytime cause of this dual carriageway error.

But Downward. You're not supposed to use any of the internet mapping sites to devise routes. ( ESPECIALLY if it involves money )

They are for checking WHERE YOU'VE BEEN, not where you're going.

If you get lost by turning up a wrong turn, you have to include this on your multi-point track to get a yard perfect distance, IF YOU CAN REMEMBER WHERE YOU WENT!

These mapping sites DO NOT plan routes. That should never be entrusted to a microprocessor. I find my brain does a better job.
