From a similar era I think, this is my 1999/2000 FSR. I bought it second-hand about two decades ago. Great fun although it doesn't get used enough because I am a road rider at heart.

The rear shock got replaced after some heavier-than-usual use on a Scout expedition a few years ago, when I was leading the cycling activity and so pretty-much had two solid weeks of riding. Retrobike collectively provided the key advice:

Trek 6500 SLR in sunburst orange.
From around 2008.
Upgrades: It had rim brakes but frame and wheels were disc ready, so it now has full hydraulic discs. The original forks weren't very good so it now has Rock Shox air forks of some kind on it.

I bought an identical framed bike a few years back, which I have built into a quite nice "rat bike" hand painted in Hammerite red. Suspension fork was dumped for a lightweight carbon fork. Handy for visits to places where bikes have a nasty habit of disappearing. I know it might still get targeted for parts, but hopefully they might just leave it alone.
