The G Shock does have a certain cachet amongst men of action. The EW-9053 is current choice for those in the know as it's the version issued to Navy SEALs.

Useless fact. SEALs were "issued" with Rolex Sumbariners back in the day. They were supposed to be returned when they left the service, but I expect many weren't.

Repairs were eye wateringly expensive and the navy had been scouting about for a replacement when the G Shock came along as the first non premium watch to properly meet the required specs. They now get issued the 9053 with a red filter over the 'glass', although many prefer to buy a Submariner instead as its a bit of a military frogman thing.

The French Marine Nationale used to issue Tudor subs to their frogman and they now change hands for very serious money (the watches, not the frogmen.)

Dunno if I've shared this. I've fallen out with automatics because I'm fed up of winding them (my job involves a lot of driving, not much activity). I like this because it's clear and very easy to read and, being quartz, it's accurate. Unusual quirk though - the date goes 31-32-33-34-00

Nice one SF, glad to be of service.

It definitely punches above its weight in terms of quality and worldtimers at that price are like hen's teeth. The only thing you might want to think about is if you have big wrists as it's quite a small watch - 40mm - but is fine for me as I have 6.3" chicken wrists.

Let me know if you bag one.

Not sure I'm going to have any cash left for a watch after spending the first 4 days in Chicago. Eating out and drinking is eye wateringly expensive, even before tips.

Never mind, there'll be other chances to pick one up. And if you can get one second hand, microbrands usually can be picked up pretty cheaply.

I remember Chicago not being cheap and that was about 20 years ago (though was on expenses so didn't care).

Why not ditch the autos and get a hand-winder then?

I really do like those Mondaines. They're nerdy cool in the same way as the digital (retro) Casios, and I love the fact that they're easy to read. Now if they *did* make them with a mechanical movement (I don't think they do), I'd be first in the queue for one...

My Panerai's a hand winder, lasts about 2-3 days. I remember to wind it every 4-5 days.

Morning routine. Get up, brush teeth, throw clothes on, wind watch...

Mind you, mine only have a 40 hr power reserve absolute tops, but then they're all those tiddly little vintage ladies movements...

Have a look at the prices Rolex Milsubs, 5513/5517 references command these days, easy six figures. I love watches but the prices for high end stuff, new and vintage is just insane. My Dad had a yellow gold Cartier Santos when I was young. He sold it 20 odd years ago for £2k. They were selling for around £25-30k a year or two ago.

I quite fancy a vintage Tudor submariner, one with military provenance such as marine nationale or USN Mercury/Gemjni/Apollo recovery diversity, but proces for those aren't far behind their Rolex cousins these days.
