Would you use a facility described below?

I'm sure this has been done before but I thought I would get some feedback from you all.

If there was a place where you could a) securely lock up your bike inside which was manned all day b) provided showering and changing facilities and c) provided a bike cleaning and general maintenance service within the city centre would you use it?

If so how much would you be willing to pay per day?

Thanks for your feedback.

I used Leeds cyclepoint for 2(ish) years - £120 p/year got you secure parking, manned during normal hours and you get a pass to get access out of hours.

Showering facilities, unless well cleaned and maintained, I dont think would be a great benefit as I'd be wary of using public facilities.

When did larger public toilets stop having attendents and services, I'm sure you used to be able to shower, get a haircut/shave and use a shower in some ye olde conveniences?

I'm intrigued by the notion that a cycle commuter needs shower facilities at work. There are tens of thousands of people riding to work in other European countries who don't. What's the difference?

Look at a picture of Dutch cyclists riding to work, and compare that to a picture of British cyclists riding to work.

I am usually a sweatty mess by the time I get to work, so the Dutch method will not work form me.

Baby wipes for me. No showers, or lockers, just the nearest loo.

I, like @fossyant, really do need a shower when I get to work, and I'm sure they're are many others that would also need use of the facility too. It's not for everyone just like cycling to work or going to the gym is, its just another facility that I believe, would be ideal for cyslists and runners too (sorry if I offended people by saying runners :P).

It seems like a lot of you are content with using the baby wipes and a sink method which is fine but you could do quite a lot of things people do in a gym at home, but it's more convenient and thats what a service like this would offer - convenience... however I understand it's not for everyone.

Keep up the comments and feedback though.

Thanks for all of the feedback so far.

At the moment I have showering facilities at my place of work too but I just wondered if there was any scope in having this sort of thing available for those working in the city centre, especially with the boom in cycling in which we have seen in the recent years.

Yeah, something like that, but obviously with the showering facilities which would be the main draw.

Manchester council think so. IIRC the Bike Hub that has now opened in the city centre has shower facilities and IIRC it's a tenner a month.

I would pay to use such a facility if I didn't have the facilities at work.

If I worked in a town and didn't have th facilities already supplied then yes.

As it is I have showers available (and fresh uniform if I want it), and the bike is stored on a site with armed police guarding it so that wouldn't be required :becool:

I was just thinking about something similar to this, mostly the locking the bike up and it would be for when touring on the bike not a commute. Currently my place of work can't do enough for cyclists and people that travel with the environment in mind

I'm very happy in principle to embrace the copenhagenist philosophy of cycle commuting but for me, the difference is that I combine my commute with riding for training/fitness purposes, not just as a means of getting from A to B. I find it's a better use of my time than sitting on a train.

It's certainly not that I feel the need to get togged up in Lycra every time I go out on my bike - I frequently ride in civvies and don't require a shower at the end, often for what many people would consider "long" distances.

I'm looking into joining this place: http://www.h2bikerun.co.uk/ as I intend to start doing a 30 mile (each way) commute into London a couple of times a week. Secure parking, lockers, gym, showers, etc, etc. Perfect for me as a) I have no such facilities at work and b) I can't ride 3 miles without sweathing, never mind 30.
