Signs of Spring

Loads of snowdrops in flower here and even the odd daff. The first swallow has reached Europe from Africa - ( Gibraltar Feb 6th) along with a few house martins. Any other signs of Spring to cheer us up amidst the winter gloom?

Working for a well known supermarket, we have been getting deliverys of pallets of Easter eggs and loads of "pancake day" promotions so its not far off.

There's a blackbird singing in the garden each morning - obviously trying to impress the girls and chase off any rivals.

Absolutely glorious spring day today.

Bright dry reasonably mild today and yes snow drops out on the verges, crocuses just poking through out the back, had a quick spin on my fixie then washed and polished the car first time the weather has allowed that since Oct!

There's quite a few song thrushes singing round our way, and I heard the first skylark of the year yesterday.

In Scotland snow is usually the first sign of spring

No sign of Spring yet.

I haven't seen the first shirtless chav around.

Winter hasn't started yet - just wait a week or 2. We had a foot of snow last March......

Today's rain seemed warmer.

Snowdrops been out for a while now, as have the primroses, but today's the first time that the daffs at the bottom of the road have been in flower. They're late this year - they normally flower by the end of January. Mind you, as is traditional here now that these particular daffs are blooming, today was definitely colder than it has been of late.

i've found three common lizards under refugia. it's not a brumation site, so they must have ventured out and realised their mistake and sought shelter. i've also seen several smooth newts under felts and tins.

a friend found a couple of juvenile slow worms under refugia too.

snowdrops, crocus, winter aconite and primrose are all in bloom.

long-tailed tits are pairing up (about the only time you only see two of them) and i saw a pair of great crested grebes courting last week.

Aye, we've got a particularly melodious blackbird working his patch early most mornings. I now know his song well enough that I could write down his classic opening phrases down on music paper. Astonishingly close to our musical scales, he sings in B flat and repeats his first three notes.

And the goldfinches are getting rowdy!

The goldfinches don't visit my garden - never sure if that's because there aren't any locally or if that's because I don't put any nyjer seed out. Maybe I should start...
