I currently have a giant hybrid bike with 35mm tyres and i am looking at getting a new bike on the c2w scheme and am looking at some sort of cx.

What spare parts(if any) can i hope to be able to use between the two ? Wheels, tyres etc etc?

That means you then end up with one bike not two (read the rules), and a bunch of spare parts

What i meant was if I was to say buy a spare wheel for example, would i be able to use it on both of the bikes ?

What are yuo looking to upgrade on your Giant hybrid / why do you need spare parts for it?

You may be able to swap some bits between them, but I think that it is unlikely that you would want to be swapping bits over each time you went for a ride. You may find that some parts can be shared, but in practice I don't think you will want or need to.

I am a firm believer of the right tools for the job. So if you have two bikes, make them for different purposes and they can be best suited to each purpose.

My hybrid (sirrus) is for going to the shops / pub on. It had mud guards, lights and a relaxed geometry. I toyed with putting slimmer tyres on it and making it more racey / faster, but ended up thinking that if I wanted to be going fast, I would take the road bike. The aim of the hybrid being to transport me to places and for me to get there not as a sweaty mess, hence going at a more relaxed pace and not needing it to be at all racey.

Out of interest, can I ask why you are looking at a CX? Are you planning to take it off road, or do you see it as a stronger road going bike than a more standard road bike would be?

i am just curious really. Currently I am commuting on my hybrid which I think is fine. There are a few routes from my house to work, with the current one being along a dirt / rutted path for a few miles, then a few roads and cycle paths.

One of the other routes to work, is by road which is where a road bike would come in its own, I am planning to try this route sometime next week (fortunately found a cycle buddy who commutes from my home area to work area).

I don't particular fancy the position on road bikes as I aint the smallest of guys but this could just be because i haven't tried a ride using them.

So I am thinking that a CX would be a reasonable compromise. This year I would like to build up to a reasonable length ride(50 to 100 miles) which would be more difficult / tiring on a hybrid.

Nothing to stop me from getting a dedicated road bike next year thought

I have got through a bit of a learning process recently about bike geometry, especially on road bikes. There can be quite a lot of difference between different 'road' bikes, so it might just be a case of finding a good LBS, having a chat to them about your likely riding and what you are comfortable with and possibly sitting on a few different bikes with a few different geometries. You may be surprised by how different they can be and how comfy you can get.

Out of my bikes, my roadie is the most comfortable, possibly because of the different positions it offers using the bar / hoods / drops etc.

Ah, i thought all road bikes where very similiar, something that i will check out.

Went to a LBS to get my current bike but i reckon the frame is to large(another reason why i want to change) so i would'nt want to go back to that shop, but there are others in the area.

Do road bikes have weight limits?

Which Giant is your hybrid? My Roam has 700c wheels, so tyres/tubes would probably be the same on a CX, possibly wheels depending on rim/disc brakes. I'm not sure why you'd want to share parts between two bikes though As for weight, I think it's only really meant to be wheels that could be an issue if they're lightweight/low spoke count, I'd imagine aggressive geometry and a big beer belly wouldn't be ideal though either. I don't think it's as much about what type of bike you want as exactly what you want a bike to do, there's so much variation and blurring between categories you can be quite precise about what you want

ah ok, I am wee bit north of that, give or take 22 stone(although i aint weighed myself in the last two weeks since i started to commute.. something to do tonight me thinks)
