SIM card trouble with old, simple Nokia. Please help...

Hello. I dropped and lost my phone recently. I got it back after a couple of days. When I got it back it was switched off and when I switched it on it would not acknowledge/recognise the SIM card ("switch on without sim card?" it asked).
The phone itself works and recognises a different SIM just fine, AND the original SIM does work in a different phone. Any advice to get the bloody thing going again? The phone is a 2700.

Get a pencil eraser and use it to clean the contacts on the SIM.

Really, seriously? A lint-free cloth is what I've read elswhere.

I believe it does as I've just tried one and the phone sez "Phone restricted" with an option to "undo". What does this mean?

Some sticky tape or address label cut to shape and stuck on the back of the SIM might help push it down onto the contacts better. Failing that, either phone the network or go to a network shop and get a new SIM.

Correct on the cloth only

Phone Restricted is the handset locked to the network. Option to Undo, is to unlock the phone. Same message, avoid further damage and get a new SIM card and have the number transferred across.

The problem is the sim card itself. If all else fails go down to your network providers outlet and ask for a new sim which they should able provide FoC.

It's the combination of the two, from what you've said.

Another SIM, same network, works. Both seem to have taken damage when dropped. Split, they work.

Exactly. Bizarre. What's happening?

Both parts have problems, which mean they don't want to work with each other. Simplest way is to replace the card.

I think the phone has received a bump that has affected the contact between SIM and the contact points holder. A different SIM works because the wear on the contact points is just different enough. A different phone because the contact points are just different enough. It only has to be a fraction of a millimetre.
