Because, notwithstanding BODMAS, addition and subtraction have equal priority, so you do those as you encounter them (left to right). Same goes for division/multiplication.

There are several possible conventions, but, to those in the know, one of those conventions has been adopted in preference to the others.

As I observed before, the convention that tells you what to do in the absence of brackets is just the most obvious of many conventions being used. You might just as well complain that the convention that "÷" represents division excludes those not in the know. As indeed it does, because there are a lot of functionally innumerate people in society. That doesn't mean that the convention isn't useful, as it removes all ambiguity. In practice I'd probably put brackets in, but that's because I tend to look for clarity.

If I do a strict left-to-right, top-to-bottom calculation following the normal conventions of written English then I get the answer 3, because that horizontal line between the 1 and the 3 is a sign meaning division just as much as the ÷ sign.

Here are the rules:-

Division and Multiplication
Once you have done any parts of the sum involving brackets or powers the next step is division andmultiplication.

Multiplication and division rank equally, so you go from left to right in the sum, doing each operation in the order in which it appears.

Example:
4 × 5 ÷ 2 + 7 = ?

You need to do division and multiplication first, but you have one of each.

Start from the left and work across to the right, which means that you start with 4 × 5 = 20. Then do the division, 20 ÷ 2 = 10.

Only then do you move to the addition: 10 + 7 = 17. The answer is 17.

Addition and Subtraction
The final step is to calculate any addition or subtraction. Again, subtraction and addition rank equally, and you simply move from left to right.

Example:
4 + 6 - 7 + 3 = ?

You simply start on the left and work your way across.

4 + 6 = 10
10 - 7 = 3
3 + 3 = 6
The answer is 6.

So the answer to the OP is 1.

I have been charged £-2.50. It came about because the order of the three operations done on the price was done wrong. I did actually see another example but it was less amusing.

£10 reduced to half price, reduced to half price again minus £5 was £-2.50.
It should have been £10 minus five pounds, half price then half price = £1.25.
It could also have been £10 half priced, minus five pounds and halved again which is £0.
