Simple question, what would you do at this junction?

I have a simple question relating to a junction I use most days.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=barrack road, exeter&hl=en&ll=50.715428,-3.51025&spn=0.003444,0.010568&sll=50.352837,-3.888518&sspn=0.006941,0.021136&t=h&hnear=Barrack Rd, Exeter, United Kingdom&z=17&layer=c&cbll=50.715469,-3.510362&panoid=om1wTmLQu8l_e1UgtMzmpA&cbp=12,121.94,,0,1.37

I'm coming from Wonford Road, turning right into Barrack Road (down the hill). The lights are controlled in such a way that when I have green, only cars coming along the same road in the opposite direction have green.

What I typically do is having positioned myself on the right, and wheel out to the middle. Cars going straight on and easily get past me. My question relates to those vehicles coming towards me who want to turn right (from their perspective).

Often cars will flash me to allow me to turn right in front of them so I cross on their nearside (i.e. their passengers side). However, I thought it was safer to offside. Usually I try to get eye contact to work out what their intention is.

So, what should I be doing at this junction. Should I try and go out further and then go past them on their drivers side?

If you look at google maps, drivers going along Barrack Road are encouraged by the road marking to go near-side - near-side. Should I do the same?

The decision as to whether it is nearside vs nearside or offside vs offside is the first vehicle at the junction (if there are no road markings).
Do what you feel comfortable with.

Thanks Gaz, in effect, I do tend to improvise and see what the car who is turning across me intends to do. What do you mean by the first car at the junction? I'm typically the first from my side, although there will be a car who is first from his side wanting to turn right

legally you actually should go around eachother, i.e. have a dance in the middle and go clockwise around each other
Knocked a Motor cyclist off in france a s a teenager once as I crept out (in a car) to do the same as you do at this junction - obviously in reflection being France. MC came right over the bonnet and another 100 yards onwards.
Police told me I was in the wrong and showed me their book of rightfulness with pictures to show me how to drive correctly.

So really we should all have a dance in the middle!!!!! :wahhey:

I'd stay to the right, go deep into the junction almost as if you're going straight-on and cut right at the last moment safe in the knowledge that A&E is only a few hundred yards away.
They built Wonford Hospital on the fields where when I was at 'The Little School' we used to have our sports day ... and the sun always shone.
