I have a simple question relating to a junction I use most days.
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=barrack road, exeter&hl=en&ll=50.715428,-3.51025&spn=0.003444,0.010568&sll=50.352837,-3.888518&sspn=0.006941,0.021136&t=h&hnear=Barrack Rd, Exeter, United Kingdom&z=17&layer=c&cbll=50.715469,-3.510362&panoid=om1wTmLQu8l_e1UgtMzmpA&cbp=12,121.94,,0,1.37
I'm coming from Wonford Road, turning right into Barrack Road (down the hill). The lights are controlled in such a way that when I have green, only cars coming along the same road in the opposite direction have green.
What I typically do is having positioned myself on the right, and wheel out to the middle. Cars going straight on and easily get past me. My question relates to those vehicles coming towards me who want to turn right (from their perspective).
Often cars will flash me to allow me to turn right in front of them so I cross on their nearside (i.e. their passengers side). However, I thought it was safer to offside. Usually I try to get eye contact to work out what their intention is.
So, what should I be doing at this junction. Should I try and go out further and then go past them on their drivers side?
If you look at google maps, drivers going along Barrack Road are encouraged by the road marking to go near-side - near-side. Should I do the same?
