During our LEJOG this summer our only minor infraction with anyone was a grumpy car driver at a set of TTLs nr Culloden Who couldn’t wait for us to clear the roadworks.

Yesterday I wasn’t even on my bike 😂

Check out any driver in the advance stop box. They have run a red light.

only if they enter the box after the light has gone red.

There seems to be a common theme through this post - see the bold.
Thankfully, we don't all cycle in London.

no we dont, but some of us do have to visit the place fairly often, and its a very noticeable issue thesedays. and that walking around as a pedestrian, you do feel somewhat that just walking on a pavement let alone crossing the road has become more fraught than it should be.

equally one has to remember our politicians, and a good chunk of the MSM spend their lives in a Londonbubble that means they often see London as being totes representative of the UK and no doubt would more than happily introduce some new law or restriction or something just to be seen to be doing something

Precisely. Feral behaviour by many cyclists in central London has consequences for us all, as our politicians and lawmakers work there.

I rarely see feral cyclists outside central London. However, good behaviour in the rest of the country has less influence on lawmakers and journalists than feral cyclists in our capital city do.

They should never be stationary in it. If they are in it, and light red, they are a red light jumper.

It is not always a traffic offence to stop in an advance box according to Highway Code rule 178:

If your vehicle has proceeded over the first white line at the time that the signal goes red, you should stop as soon as possible and MUST stop at the second white line.

The law treats the two solid white lines differently. The first line is only a mandatory stop line when the light is already amber or red.

Which means if you cross it on green, you won’t be in it when lights go red.

Crawling traffic.

They could have been driving slowly through the box when the lights changed to amber and then got stuck on red.

It is not always a traffic offence to stop in the box.

Rule 178 of the Highway Code states: "Motorists, including motorcyclists, MUST stop at the first white line reached if the lights are amber or red and should avoid blocking the way or encroaching on the marked area at other times, e.g. if the junction ahead is blocked.

There is an important legal difference between 'should' and 'must' in the Highway Code.

It is not always a traffic offence to stop in the box.

nope. if the light was green when you entered the ASL box, passed the first line, its perfectly permitted for you to stop in the box then because of queuing traffic, or oncoming traffic preventing you from making progress to an exit, this is not a box junction. And if the light goes red whilst you are sat in the box, you havent jumped a red light and are allowed, in fact encouraged to stay put till the next phase.

you are only a red light jumper if you cross the first line of the ASL when the light was already red, technically should be amber as with level crossings, but theyll only prosecute on red.

now its splitting hairs because frankly most drivers move to the 2nd line when the light is red anyway. but Im just highlighting really the infraction only occurs if the traffic light was actually red when they crossed the first line.

I don't jump red lights when I cycle or drive.
It's illegal, irresponsible and dangerous.

Also if a cyclist does it it just gives further ammunition to the anti cycling crowd who label all as red light jumpers anyway.
