A long time ago I read that a small splash of water breaks the surface and allows the fumes to do their thing.
I tried it, it seemed to work, so I have done it ever since.
A true story.
When I was 17ish I read that Mick Jaggers favourite drink was whisky and coke so being an avid Stones fan that became my drink.
My boss used take me home from work and he was a whisky drinker (as his face showed) and occasionally he would call in at a pub. 1st time, he asked if I liked whisky. I said yes and asked for coke with it. I remember his facial expression as he said "i thought you said you liked whisky".

Ive always felt thats just the way people who put ice in their whisky, or whiskey... justify their choices.

if you let it breath abit, you get the same effect imo. whilst acknowledging that yes taste buds in your mouth can be reset after pounding them with alcohol for a bit, with a dash of water, but it doesnt actually have to be in the drink itself, you are just diluting it that way.

as for whisky and coke, bourbon yes, and ice is a valid accompaniment then, southern comfort & lemonade yes, jamesons and ginger ale, also very nice.

but dont go adding mixers to a classic malt whisky.

You can be spoiled. I was once in a bar having a half price sale on some of their most expensive whiskies while on a massive pay rise celebration. We all sampled a 1938 Macallan. I will never taste a whisky as nice again. Google today's price and you'll see why.
We each paid £40 for a 35ml measure. (Not between us, for clarification)

My daughter and her boyfriend brought back a bottle of the middle one from a visit to Scotland, as a birthday present for me.
It's very good.

I was gifted a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue Label waaaay back in the 80s (i know its not a malt).......but it cost over £100 back then.
I must check today's price.

Being one of those souls who think that most single malts smell of cat piss (and not being a cat lover), I really can't suggest anything.
