I prefer to have a single pannier on the off side, I dismount and support the bike from the near side so it is easier to load/unload the pannier on the off side.
Right. It makes you appear wider to drivers and the car drivers tend to give more room imo.
I always use nearside. During darkness/reduced light conditions I have either a reflective band with flashing lights, or just a flashing light strapped to my ankle on the off side, a rear pannier would block this from the view of drivers behind![]()

and I don't like the idea of my pannier getting greasy with stuff flicking off the chain
You go fast enough to flick stuff off the chain?
Not a problem for me in more ways than one, I'm old and fat and the pannier is a polypropylene BikeBin and greasy stuff just wipes off.

We all seem to be assuming the single pannier will be on the back of the bike.![]()
I suppose it's obvious to everyone that a single front pannier would be best placed on the near side.![]()
