I think most panniers are right and left handed. I've never seen a pair which are both the same, or one of them would be snafu for the very reason you give.

Mine are both identical. The previous pair I had (which were exactly the same) weren't. May have been a manufacturers error.

Indeed, or a retailer's error. I can't see them being intended for sale like that.

Arch has odd panniers!

There's got to be a law against that.
I've even heard people suggest that Arch is a girl. Although I am not so sure myself.

When I only use one pannier I put it on the offside. I do this because it covers the derealieur , keeping it away from anyone who might brush up against it in the street or on the train, but I notice the majority of people see to use the nearside if only using one. Is it something I am missing or am I putting too much thought into this?

A 'weighty' question indeed. From someone who is apparently indeed 'putting too much thought' into this - well done for realising this.

I wonder: have you ever thought of taking up a hobby? Or better still, buying a car/getting a girlfriend? I mean, for goodness sake - Gawd give me strength.

Surely readers: in the 'get a girlfriend, go out and have fun bit' suggestion lies the solution?

The Orca has one pannier the near side - cos it dresses that way when on the stand and, for some reason, I find it nearly totally impossible to put the U lock in place from the offside anyway (I discovered this at the supermarket - took at least 5 minutes of muttering and getting covered in bike muck; dunno why it should be difficult).

In my saner moments, or photo shoots, I use the rack top bag instead... and for those really big shops I use both

Tasker, here's a friendly non - official piece of advice from one of the mods. I know you're trying to be funny, and sometimes you are, but some of your posts are coming across as rather abrasive and ... well, unpleasant. Try and tone it down a bit, if possible.

Far less unpleasant than the above. I would rather see an honest sneer than a censored blandishment. I realise that it;s your bat and ball and we all here play by the mods rules, but if i had found Tasker's unfunnyness at all worth commenting upon I would have. TBH I think your "friendly non - official piece of advice" was patronising in the extreme and would have been far better done from " A N OTHER MOD " as a private message.

How do we know he's a mod?

I had one once, but then we went out for the day and she only had one pannier on her bike.

How could a relationship flourish with someone like that!

Ah but if you'd also had only the one pannier and the opposite one to boot, it would have been a sign, and you'd have both rode off into the sunset together.

And from this fabulous piece of logic I hereby conclude that two pannier cyclists are either asexual or not looking for a girl/boyfriend

Fair enough. That's the point of advice: people are free to ignore it if they wish. Although I can't see what's "unpleasant" about my post, but there we are.
