Sorry Hackbike, but I have to ask others... is it just me or is that ugly as F***?
A lot of couriers in London use SS or fixies and they jump lights - its the only way they can make a living.
I commute on a fixie. I wouldn't say I'm snobby about it. I wanted to make use of an old 531 frame I had when I bought my new road bike. The frame had horizontal dropouts so I thought I'd convert it. Bought a flip-flop hub (allows me to have it as either SS or fixed) and away i went. I rode the SS side for about 100 yards. thought OK, let's try the fixed and loved it immediately. I've never changed it back.
There's something about feeling like I'm really cycling. No resting - if the bikes is moving my legs are working. I commute from north London into the city and back (c.18 miles round) three times a week and I'm getting stronger and stronger. There's a fairly steep and long hill up to Highgate but as previous contributors have said, it seems easier without having to worry about gears and I regularly pass people on decent road bikes on the way up. You get into a rhythm and the momentum helps. the bike is light and responsive and great fun to ride.
For some reason I attract a lot of racers, maybe because I wear cycling kit, or maybe it's because of the bike. I don't know. I do try to push myself so maybe people want to beat me. If only they knew they were racing a 46 year old who's about 2 stone overweight and just trying to work up a bit of a sweat instead of sitting on the tube for an hour and a half every day!
