I'm a bit of an unashamed roadie, but I have no idea what to look for in a bike for mixed use.

I ride a Specialized Tarmac for my normal riding of around 4,000 miles per year but I need something suitable for riding with my kids. At the moment I've got an old Raleigh Europa which I use with a tag-a-long bike but the Raleigh is way past its best and really not worth tarting up.

I want a bike that I can use for riding with the kids, something that is good on roads but that can also handle canal towpaths and a bit of very light off roading. I am thinking that a mountain bike is probably too far towards off roading, so then I thought of a hybrid with a suspension fork, but do i need this? So then could I get a flat bar road bike with clearance for quite fat tyres (35+) that would do the job?

The title of the thread is about the Specialized offerings for flatbar and hybrid bikes, but I am not tied to a brand, in fact having a non-Specialised bike in our garage of 8 bikes (kids stuff included) might not be a bad thing!

Do you think a flat bar road bike with wide tyres will do it, or is a suspension fork worthwhile? This bike really is just for knocking around on with my kids and occasional pub duties, so I don't expect to cover more than about 100 miles per year on it, but I do want to end up with the right tool for the job.

What sort of bike would you go for?

I have had both in the past. Sirrus if mainly roads, Crosstrail if you aren't fussed about road speed but want to go on something rougher than a bit of gravel. I think the Sirrus will take 32mm tyres, indeed the lower models have these stock. Personally, I think the Trek 7.x fx models are better away from roads. But a 'hybrid' will do what you want.

Also look at Whyte ;) Very good deals on older hybrid models here http://www.discountcyclesdirect.co....=333&CSS_ID=698&P_MIN=0&P_MAX=10000&MF_ID=231

Like you I was mainly riding road bikes for a few years then decided to look for something more suited to mixed terrain without wanting to get a full on MTB. After shopping around and reading reviews I got a Giant Roam. I love it, very fast and nimble on the roads (despite the lock out fork) and really fun on forest rails too. Was just saying in another thread that I often choose that over my Boardman Road bike (which I also love to bits) for most general riding.

Swapped the tyres from 700x40 to a pair of 700x32 and weirdly didn't notice too much of a speed increase and was way less comfortable too so considering swapping them back. I keep the forks locked out on all but the most harsh forest trails ( or cobbled streets!).

Would defo recommend the Roam though.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. I've also seen the Cube LTD CLS bikes which looks nice.

It might be time to scour ebay to see what is going second hand...
