These items (except the headset spacers) will be in your pocket, so still with you................ except higher up, so your centre of gravity is higher than if they were on the bike, which is not desireable i.e. leave them on the bike.

Look at SRAM Red brakes. Way better than the Planet X ones and similar weight. Better looking too IMO.

SRAM Red brakes are like anchors, not because they are heavy ( which they they are not), I mean with regards braking, they are unbelievably good!

Planet X CNC brakes: 205 gms and currently £90! I've got the forged version on the old Roubaix and I love them, especially the Swisstop green pads.

The SRAM look at least £160 better! But fair enough there is quite a price differential, I wouldn't bother with those PX brakes at all though, I'd go with one of the big 3.

How does it compare to the sl2?


I only rode the SL2 for 40 miles but the SL3 feels stiffer, livelier and more connected with the road if that's possible. The SL2 felt a bit soggy especially in the rear end, I kept looking down to check I hadn't punctured.

Oh no, I like them, they're minimal, light, tiny and nice and powerful and the little camming cable puller is super-trick. They have a very direct and light feel to them. The only possible disadvantage is that if you do forget to reconnect the cable and you set off, you've absolutely no brakes at all. Removing a wheel, they're no more fiddly or time-consuming than an old V brake.

Follow up news: thought I'd try a 110mm stem instead of the current 100mm and before buying one, on the off-chance I rang the Spesh Concept store to ask whether they did any kind of exchange deal, to be told: "I'll put one in the courier for you today, you should have it tomorrow, send back whichever doesn't suit you."

Blimey! That's what I call service!

This is what you get when you compare on recommended retail.

The reds are at £135 on Merlin Cycles, you might be able to get them for cheaper. They are the best brake I have ever tried, and one of the lightest that actually work. They also come already with the swisstop green pads, so the price differential is even less.

I hate the look of the PX ones, but if you're happy that's all that counts.

Of the brakes you mean? No, the bike came with Ultegra brakes, I expect they will go in my box of bits or straight on Eblag.

Thanks for all the nice comments. Yes I transferred the Ksyrium SLs straight over, the standard DT Swiss wheels aren't anything special and the Espoir Elite tyres are awful, only 60 tpi and really dull. They definitely economise on the tyre and wheel package.

So how does 2013 feel compared with 2006? Well the first thing you notice if you jump on a modern carbon frame, Roubaix or the Tarmac I also tested, is how precise they feel. The acceleration and climbing are good as you would expect and the bike holds a line fantastically well, especially in corners. On downhills it really shines; it will carve a line like a good pair of skis so that you can really feel the tyres doing their stuff. This must be where a quality tyre with a good tpi becomes worthwhile. On fast twisty descents the 2013 bike just begs you to go faster, it brings out the nutter in you. Then when you brake there's no drama, it simply stops quickly and precisely, presumably thanks to the stiffer head tube area and better torsional stiffness. The ride feels stiff but not at all punishing, you feel worn-out top-dressing but it doesn't shake you up.

When you get off the 2013 bike and back onto the 2006, it feels good and smooth but vague in comparison; you just don't feel as if you're in contact with the road through the bike in the same way.

Just done a slow 25 mile family cruise on the flat Fylde and can't wait to do a good long ride tomorow then a hooligan ride on a weekday eveing with my very fast and competitive cycling buddy; that will be when the bike gets pushed hard and the additional stiffness should count.

Edit: I've just realised also that when you're cruising along and messing about, looking behind you or reaching for a bottle or dodging potholes it almost seems to look after itself, it's like riding a motorbike because it feels so stable and just carries on in the same line. This must be because changing the distribution of your weight doesn't upset the frame. I can suddenly understand how the pros seem to get away with dressing and undressing on the move, handing bottles over, grabbing car door frames, all kinds of stunts that would upset a less stiff bike.
