Length is irrelevant as far as I concerned (ooer missus) - it's always been number of skips.

I've been working on the problem for fifty years on the same creek in Cornwall. It is not just a kid's pastime.

1) Stone selection is vital. A bit of slate is good, but it needs to have some weight in order to give it "legs". Heavier stuff works better for me.

2) Back-spin and low delivery are vital

3) Mirror smooth water is essential

4) A couple of stiff G&Ts before addressing yourself to the task, as the darkness falls, tends to work. This is a mad sport where you are entirely unlikely to be hauled in for a drugs test. Your family may, however, call you in for supper.

Magic!

Good luck.

I too have spent many an hour practicing. So much so that my shoulder has a sort of RSI now and I can't throw more than a few before the aches cut in.

When chucking stones at targets in the water (sticks and planks etc) I now have to do under arm throws.

So play nicely folks and play safely

My only claim to fame in this respect is managing to skim a brick I found on the beach. It only managed one skip with a decent bit of air before it sank like, er, a brick.

The very best attraction of this activity is that it is completely and utterly pointless. There are so few "sports" that come close.....

OK, golf maybe....

With biceps as big as mine I can skim stones to the isle of wight whilst standing at the bottom on spinniker tower. Not that I want to boast or anything as boasting may make me seem to come accross as too arrogant....and frankly, I'm too good to be arrogant
