Just had a letter from Sky saying we have exceeded our 2gb per month usage.

I asked how do we know and is there a measuring tool and they say no.

I asked them to tell me how much I use per month and they say can't tell us.

So be warned if you go for Sky that they are on the lookout for people going over their useage but can't tell you how much !

It must be the video streaming that does it - How much does 1 hour of I player use ?
Who knows ??!

Newnet are very good. I get 3Gb per month. They give you daily warnings from 2.5Gb and you can pre-order a permanant extra 1Gb (£1.00) in case you go over at any time . Don't use it don't pay for it.
On their site you can see your daily useage and previous months at any time.
Most impoortantly you get a qualified experienced British technician based in England to help with technical issues on local call rates 24/7

What do you expect for free though ;) I pay an extra £5 a month and get a better speed and a higher limit, still cheaper than anything else. You can pay more for unlimited. I can't comment on the support as I haven't had to use it yet.

There's a few free tools about - for Windows I use this one which has proved pretty reliable at measuring usage.

My mum used to work for sky so she had it trialled out on her it was pretty bad at first, always dropping connection but now its pretty fast and reliable.

For the first week or so sometimes connections are funny as they adjust themselves...or that's what the virgin stuff said

The fastest speed we can get is 2.5 so pointless paying for "upto 8mb"

not at all. there is more to an ISP than just speed. Many throttle for example. You may be able to receive fast download speeds but its not much use if your connection is laggy and your ISP throttles your connection

id rather pay an extra £2 per month for an ISP with instant tech help based in England at local call rates.

First call you make with a technical problem thats solved straightaway without any fuss is worth the extra cost to me

I have the unlimited package from Sky, at £10 per month I find it great value, have not had to call the help line since the initial switch from Pipex, 18 months ago.

But you get the extra quota - worth it if you do a lot.

I think the freebie package is great for just web browsing etc - but streaming and downloading needs a full service really

Spot on. Sky might be cheap, but wait until you have any problems, or like Downward, get warned about your usage even though they can't tell you what your usage is....

Though to be fair, for the price you pay, Sky's service is pretty good value. It's all about whether you want something cheap and generally ok, or are willing to pay that bit more to get something that will be more reliable, faster and provide better support.

Hmm yeah don't download now and only watch maybe an hour streaming video a week.
Don't play online games anymore until MW2 comes out.

We shall see when they get their tool.

just had a look - 6gb then 7gb - and currently at 1.5gb - has dropped right down this month. My limit is now 10GB.
Not sure how they would tell you where the traffic goes - they would probably be accused of snooping if they did:smile:
