all the programs that are currently recorded on the box?

As far as I can gather I won't be able to access them, but I can't fathom why this would be the case.

All the equipment is mine, the programs are stored on the memory of the box and were recorded whilst still a full paying Sky subscriber, and therefore I feel I should still be able to watch them.

Can anyone confirm exactly what the crack is with this?

Ask Sky, they are the ones who set the rules.

You may need to clarify the problem.

If the box is no longer connected to a satellite dish or a phone line, Sky cannot remotely wipe the drive.

Yeah thanks vern, but I have no intention of ever attempting to call that shower of $hi7e ever again!

This had crossed my mind. I don't have a phone line connected to it, and I did think I'll disconnect the aerial just prior to disconnection. So we'll see what happens.

I think you won't be able to access the box because the sky viewing card will be void, and so will not let you into the box.
The programme on the box are encrypted so need a valid subscription to be able to watch the stored programmes.
Both make sense I suppose. Before it cancels I'll remove the viewing card and I'll see what happens by removing the aerial lead as well.

The recordings will remain on the box but you will be unable to watch them without an active subscription.

Why would it work? The content is not owned by you and since you've cancelled your sub, you've also cancelled your ability to decrypt saved media off the built in HDD.

I was watching a film on TCM last night on my Sky+ HD box.

The live pause feature refused to work - it gave a 'contact your broadcaster' error message.

Out of interest, I flicked over to another channel - BBC 1 - and the live pause feature was working.

Flicked back, still not working on TCM.

A few hours later, live pause was working again on TCM.

As I said in the first post,

If that's not the case then I'm not really bothered TBH, (just have a few episodes of stuff that I'll catch up elsewhere), but Miss Smoo has a shed load of programs recorded on it, again there's nothing that can't be re-recorded elsewhere, or even on the new service being installed today, (her programs are all repeated ad nauseam), but having recorded them onto equipment I own whilst paying for their service, I fail to see why I shouldn't still be able to view them when the subscription has ceased, after all, I'm not attempting to watch a live transmission, just historic recordings.

FWIW I've just removed the viewing card and lo and behold you can't access the planner, you just get the insert viewing card message, grrr! (should have tried this first I guess, but the older I get the more of a Luddite I become!).

Ah well not to worry, goodbye Sky,. another customer of too many years to mention has gone down the road, and in the same way they don't care then Sky you will not be missed in any way what so ever either.

I had HD installed about a year ago.

The installer told me viewing cards are not used on that equipment so I no longer have one.

I'm still on Sky+ and therefore a viewing card, but I did have HD when it launched. However, at that time it wasn't upto much as there were very few channels using it, and as I didn't have sports or movies I had to pay an additional fee on top for the 'privilege' so I never felt it was worth it, hence it got cancelled shortly after.

Roll on a couple of years and I remembered my Panasonic Viera has built in Freesat, so I just ran another cable from the LNB straight into the TV, and I've had all the terrestrial HD channels ever since.

FWIW my new provider gives you ALL the HD channels for no additional cost despite still not choosing a premium package.

Why should you be able to watch them when you're no longer paying an active sub, for an active viewing card with which to decode/decrypt the HDD?

It makes little difference who owns the equipment when you haven't or don't pay for the right ability to watch the content on it.

I didn't know until today that you still had to decode/decrypt a program you'd recorded in order to watch it.

Apparently not.
