I've read that Skype is no longer supported for 32 bit machines running Ubuntu. It won't even run on mine anymore.

Could this be the reason why? You can normally use software (e.g. XP) long after its official support ends.

I don't have much experience with Ubuntu, but I can tell you Skype seldom put much effort into developing across platforms that aren't Windows, IOS or Android.

If official support has ended for Ubuntu, it should still be able to function but it will just not receive Updates or Security fixes. -- Note however, Official support typically ends when software is deemed insecure or unsafe for modern standards and would be easier to make fresh than fix old.

Possibly Skype chose not to run on unprotected OS systems, but I am speculating here.

Have you tried the web app?

https://web.skype.com

Thanks - that should work.

Did you manage to get skype working?
Yes - I'm running web skype on my Lubuntu machine at the moment. The only downside is that the alerts aren't as noticeable as on the app. However I've now still got a back-up laptop that I can use for work.
