So Sam has seen the light and is going back to League

Who is at fault? Or are the games to different now making it harder or longer to transfer?

Not the player. I don't think there is self-selection in the England team these days (unless you are a No 7 )
The proof of the upside-down pudding is how Sam Burgess impacts upon his chosen sport in the weeks to come. I hope he succeeds famously again - of course.
He missed Sydney. Sydney missed him. Adelaide is distraught. Owzat?

the key difference is the dynamic tackle-zone / breakdown, and, I suspect given how many times our Sam got pinged for it at Bath, to a lesser extent, the refereeing of the technical aspects of a tackle in Union.

The former is not something a professional League player is going to pick up in few weeks. No matter how good a League player they are. And he is very, very good.

My sense is he switched codes in the run-up to RWC 2015 on the promise, a fairly certain promise, of a place in the England setup and side. Perhaps with an assurance that the side, or its backline, would be built around him. Now that is strange given his Union club wouldn't play him in their 1st XV in the position he played at for England. And we aren't talking a 12 playing at 13 or an 11 at 14. We are talking a flanker playing at centre.

Who made that promise, and who allowed that promise to be made, we won't likely know until they've all retired and the autobiographies get written. But what I would like to see, and this is no reflection on Sam, is the summary sacking of every single person in the RFU who facilitated, encouraged, and supported his fast-tracking into the England side. Starting with the coaches, and going all the way to the top. Because anyone with a Level 2 coaching certificate would know the odds against it working out would be very, very long.

Will this discourage clubs to search for rugby league talent?
I think not, but they will want to grab it on the way up, or down, and not at its peak. And many clubs could not afford it.

^1 what he said. Disgraceful series of events, what will Luther Burrell et al be thinking? I saw SB walking around the Eithiad pitch with the rest of the team after the Uruguay match, I and thought 'what right do you have to be on that pitch?' None whatsoever. He may be a good RL player, but to expect to play RU at WC level after only a year in the game? What were the RFU thinking? Or not thinking. So, @GrumpyGregry is spot on. But it won't happen, and England will lurch on, underachieving, having the flair and individuality coached out of them. Don't fancy playing Argentina any time soon......

I want my £250 back!

To be fair the ability shown by rugby league players in running and handling is normally superior to u ion where technical and kicking skills lead the way. Therefore if the national team are looking for those skills and leadership skills it makes sense to look at league player and he earns the right by showing them skills in a different sport.

What is more worrying is what right do people from leading Union nations have in wearing the national jersey of an adopted nation and walking round the pitch?

Didn't we do almost exactly the same thing with one Andy Farrell? Fastracked into an England side then found to be not quite good enough. Wonder what happened to him? Oh wait......

Seriously though I agree with you. I feel the review of the World Cup should be widened to be one of the RFU as a whole: its structure; its day to day operation; its relationship with the English Premiership clubs and its relationship with the grass roots. I feel though there are too many vested interests for this to ever happen.

I saw Burgess play for Bath at centre: http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2015/jan/10/bath-wasps-premiership-match-report

He was immense that day - seemingly breaking through tackles at will. Maybe that just shows the gulf between the premiership and international rugby, or maybe I happened to see his one really good performance in that position?

Think he was playing inside centre that day? In a game where the score line suggests was pretty open. A few days later he played for the Saxons at centre and put in a performance I recall being described as quiet. Within weeks Bath were playing him at 6. Now if he can't get picked as first choice centre for his club...
