However, is using the Start menu to do it so onerous?

On my Windows 7 PC, I just configure the Power saving settings to put the PC to sleep after 2 hours of no activity, which is good enough for me, as it significantly reduces the PC's daily power usage.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Trust me - you don't want to map it to a key on the computer keyboard. My android tablet has got exactly that setup, and every so often I hit it by mistake while typing. Which is a right royal pain in the neck on Android, which wakes up more-or-less instantly. On windows, which takes rather longer to wake up, I'd be throwing the thing through the window in frustration.

All the laptops I use have the power button mapped to sleep - there's a function somewhere in Control Panel that controls it. I don't suppose it would be any different on a desktop.

I've got a sleep key on my keyboard, one press to put it in hibernation and again to wake it up. I've never used it till now but it works and it woke up again quickly.

I thought they all had that, it has a crescent shaped moon logo on it. I'm sure most of my previous PCs did. If yours hasn't keyboards are cheap enough.

No point in sleep mode in Windows 10 really.

Unless you boot to safe mode, you can't fully shut down Win10 without pulling the plug. By default it runs in it's Hybrid boot option.

When you shut down it saves critical parts of your session into memory. So that when you reboot it comes in considerably faster.

So unless you want to keep windows open, shut down is very similar to "hibernate".

Waking a PC up from sleep is considerably quicker than starting from scratch.

Windows 10 isn't really starting from scratch though. Unless you pull the power plug, or restart into safe mode, and shut down from there.

Is the 15 or 20 seconds or so saved worth the annoyance of a sleep key?

Like I say, the first time I ever used the sleep key was on reading this thread. I've never hit it by mistake (It is well out of the way of the main keyboard) and there was no annoyance involved.

I suppose it depends on the layout. My laptop has hotkeys which really are irritating. The F keys are actually on the Fn key, so the hotkeys are default.

F4 has a "close" hot key, that replaces what would usually be Alt+F4. This wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't next to the Volume Up key. Watching a movie in the dark in bed, and you try to turn it up half way through and hit it, automatically closing whatever you're using is annoying. I'm just glad I don't have a sleep key, though being a laptop, I can just close the lid.

Here for rides.
I want to find a way to stop Windows Hello on Windows 10 from constantly looking for my face when I've locked the screen, and to start looking for me when I hit a key or move the mouse. Any clues?

[QUOTE 4185314, member: 9609"]I would need to sit down, put glasses on and then fiddle with mouse, so yes a dedicated button is vary convenient. I think I already have the sleep mode to kick in after an hour of inactivity, but that seems a waste when I know i won't be using it.

Alt+F4
Down arrow key
Enter

That will go straight to sleep mode

You should be able to wake up the PC by clicking the mouse too
