@psmiffy just reading your blog now, what are your thoughts on the Thermolite bag liner?
Worth having - adds marginal extra warmth but keeps bag sanitary - and is good as a bag in its own right when it is very warm -good as a anti bug layer

I've noticed the Snugpak Travelpak 2 season sleeping bag seems to be claiming a low comfort temp of 2*c, a pack size of just over 5l, weight of 1,100 grams and a cost of £35, all of which seems a bit too good to be true. Anyone have any views on this bag? Is the temp rating a touch optimistic? Plus the added bonus of a built in mozzie net.

1.1kgs for a sleeping bag is quite a lot - although it fits with the claimed comfort rating.

Personally I'd ban sleeping bag manufacturers from making any claims using the word seasons. This is a good example of the confusion: with a comfort rating of 2 degrees it would be a pretty good bag for Autumn and Winter in the UK and maybe that's what they mean by two seasons.

For anywhere that you are likely to find mosquitoes it is way too hot.

A low temperature rating on a bag doesn't make it better anymore than a higher TOG rating on a duvet makes it better: a 13.5 TOG duvet is is great for the winter but not so great if it means you roast on summer nights. Ditto sleeping bags.

The comfort rating is one that needs to be ignored. One manufacturers comfort rating may differ from another for the same seasonal rating.
The season rating is more universally accepted as a standard rating. Even if it doesn't cover the seasons as we know them.

There's only four seasons in a year, yet its possible to get a five season sleeping bag.

Season Rating
One Season
Suitable for use for use during a typical UK summer, when overnight temperatures are normally at their highest.
Two Season
Late Spring to Early Autumn, overnight temperatures unlikely to fall below 0°C.
Three Season
For use in all but winter conditions, with heavy overnight frosts.
Four Season
All year use. However some may find they are too warm in warmer months.
Five Season
High altitude and expedition use.

Four and Five Season bags may ne too hot for use during the summer months.

All the above are based on the "average person", for UK valley use. If you feel colder in general, the best advice would be to go for a bag with a higher seasonal rating.

Consider also the construction of the bag. Cheaper bags will be stitched straight through(seams will match on the inside & outside). Leaving cold spots.

How many layers are used in the construction. Single layer compresses the filling where stitched. Double offset is used to elimate these cold spots by overlapping the stitched areas with a thicker piece of the second layer.
