Slick tyres. Advice & reassurance needed

I've just got a Giant Defy 5, and it's come with completely treadless tyres. My last bike had some tread, and I wasn't expecting this to come with slicks.

In a few hundred miles you'll have shaken that shameful moniker.

No tread = more grip because of the narrow width

Thanks for raising the question and the answers- I'm about to take delivery of a very similar bike which has smooth tyres and will be my first forary into the world of 25mm slicks.

I got a Giant Defy 4 last year that came with those scary tyres. You'll soon learn to trust them.
However, after about 700 miles I started picking up more than my fair share of punctures. I've now changed to Continentals - so far so good...
