D40 - excellent condition, with lens, camera bag etc
Another thing to consider is how far you want to carry it. Compacts are great for this as they are small enough to carry in your pocket. Only problem is if you have big hands you might find them a bit fiddly. I use a Nikon D7000 and with the standard zoom lens 18mm-105mm. In reasonable light you can freeze action quite easily by pushing the ISO without getting to much graining. Downside is its a big camera and takes some lugging about especially if you also carry a fullsize tripod.
Theres a good camera shop in Norwich called Wex Photography used to be called Warehouse Express and very helpful staff. They have most cameras in stock so you can have a play and see what you like.

i use pentax! lol. got a new KM to replace my KR, total package was £450 ish with a kit lens, still uses all the old pentak lenses (i have 2 18-55 mm kit lenses, a 70-200 mm telephoto and a 28-200 tele/macro/general purpose lens!) got the latest lense (28-200) for £65 so second hand bargains are easy to find.
i used it in florida to get photos at seaworld, Universal and whilst watching TNA so lots of differnt settings needed (took over 2000 photos in 10 days!) and it copped remarkably well!! will need to invest in a 50 or 100 mm lens for macro work as the wife loves this stuff (i prefer motorsport and candid street/people photography)

Have a Canon 350d, which easily takes better photos than my old compact camera. Takes pics which you couln't actually get with a compact too!
As other have said, choice of lenses is a big part of owning a DSLR. Make sure the ones you pick are usable at the distance ranges you're going to be using (i.e. distance from lens to subject), which probably means a macro lens for close up stuff. Can be expensive

I've got a Canon 1000D, and took it to Florida last summer. It and my (then) video mini-dv camera spent nearly the entire holiday in the hotel safe and I ended up using my cameraphone for pics and video.
Rather than ask "what's the best DSLR?" I'd go into Jessops or similar and try holding the cameras. If you're going to be using a DSLR then it had to be comfortable in your hands. I made that mistake by buying a Nikon D100 because it was cheap, it was clumsy and just didn't fit in my hands (though my D80 is a perfect fit)
At least you took some pictures on your camera phone
not quite the same quality as a DSLR though. No point having a decent camera unless your gonna use it. Think of all that exciting bike stuff you could have bought.

Don't get me wrong, I do use it - as well as both my daughters borrrowing it at every opportunity for their own things. I just found that taking it into the theme parks was a big hassle as you can't take it on the rides and end up paying for lockers all the time. We also ended up at Clearwater one day on the beach and I took my phone into the sea (Motorola Defy). Something I'd never contemplate with a regular camera.
