These are very good humane traps - put a smear of peanut butter in the end cap as bait - not too much as the trap over-balances.

Our cats bring in various rodents which then run loose and these are very effective.

What happens next? You dump the live bastard somewhere else to infest someone else's toaster? That is not exactly the action of a responsible citizen, is it?

Poison, poison, poison.

Did anyone mention poison?

Poison's the stuff. Everything else is a waste of time.

They're vermin. Vermin you kill. With poison.

Go swee'pea99, go.

Most people get to a "shoot in the toaster moment", and, when it comes, the humane stuff goes right out of the window.

We're surrounded by fields - dumped outside, they go to support the local population of little owls.

Cats have also brought these in!

Did the little owl survive? What did you do with it?

Opened the window - it flew out, perched briefly on top of a telegraph pole and flew off none the worse for wear.

There had been a catflap commotion during the night. Our technique is to wait in bed to see if it stops (if it's dead, it can wait till morning) or if it carries on, it's alive and one of us gets up to catch whatever it is - we've got very skilled at catching.

In this case the commotion stopped. I got up in the morning, went into the cloakroom and found this little owl perched on the curtain rail staring at me, very much alive! I've no idea how the cats caught it, let alone dragged it through two cat flaps. It seemed uninjured so I took a couple of snaps then let it out.

Yep, been there and done that. Poison is the answer.

the only rats and mice we've ever encountered, despite having lived in two victorian era houses, are the result of the cats bringing the odd one in and dropping it. that said, none has ever managed to get a foothold in the house once the cat flap is locked and food dishes removed…

if the odd rodent bought home by an enthusiastic moggy is the price to pay for keeping colonies of mice out of the house, i'd say go the cat route.

that said, our one remaining cat has never been a hunter of any standing, so i'll see how we cope now the resident feline predator has died.
