I had an electricity smart meter fitted on 21 April, but he wouldn't touch the gas one because British Gas hadn't complied with safety standards when they fitted the meter cabinet 45++ years ago. Cue a palaver getting shunted from pillar to post trying to find whose responsibility it is to fix it, and who pays. The meter man from Octopus was dropping very strong hints that it would be a lot less aggro to just leave the lid on the can of worms and forget about the smart meter, because it could end up getting very expensive (£11,000 was the figure he got quoted for one of his jobs).
Three weeks ago, the emergency man from Cadent came out and smashed a hole in the meter cabinet so that the stop cock can be operated in the manner required, and they're coming back on Wednesday to rip out the whole lot, and refit it all complete with a new cabinet. Octopus are booked to come back and fit the smart meter on Thursday.
