I doubt that the HSE would allow anythign like this to happen any more, but it occured to me that we in the UK live in such a smell free and sterile environment with filters for this, and traps for that.

You should try a visit to Tadcaster! It's a fairly small town, but it has no less than three breweries! Can't stand the smell myself, and I don't know how the residents put up with it, although perhaps the fact that the town would die overnight if the breweries closed has something to do with their tolerance.

Does anyone on here regularly drive the M5 in Somerset? Is that place near Bridgewater still pumping out a stink? Someone told me once it was the smell from the cellophane factory.

Three missing near me;
Websters brewery, Macks in the town centre & the slaughter house(long gone) that used to be in the town centre. Nice on a warm day!
No longer the taste of freshly mown grass being made ready for hay either. The taste of a different kind of grass pervades the area now.

The smell of Ballantines Distilery in Dumbarton. As a kid I couldn't stand the smell, but, over the years it grew on me and now that Ballantines is gone, I miss it.
I go past a chocolate workshop, a posh bakery and a chip stand on the commute home. They all smell fab! I'm surprised I'm not even fatter than I am.
The downside to using a motorbike to get about for longer journeys, every chip shop makes me hungry.

In my town there used to be a crisp factory, a leather manufacturing factory and an oxo cube and gravy factory. Those smells combined were very nice, but sadly all have gone apart from the leather works. They relocated to a new site where they have to have sky high extractors and fans to blow the smell into the air away from the town.

When I was about 6 my mum used to work in an office job at Liverpool airport, during the school holidays she'd take me in with her. I'd spend many a happy hour watching the planes taking off and landing.

These days the sounds and smells of an airport take me back to those innocent times.

I know this is an old thread, but I smelt roasting coffee for the first time in many a year this morning. Took me right back to my childhood when there was a coffee shop in Bromley High Street that used to make the whole street smell. Not sure whether it is a particularly nice smell, but is is certainly distinctive.

The airport smell, which I think of as Kerosene always takes me back to the excitement and fear of lining up at the back of a Hercules, knowing I was going to be taking off in it, but not landing in it. In my my past life I was a paratrooper. I still get a little knot in my stomach when I get a whiff.

Is the Sarson's vinegar factory in Bermondsey still going? Powerful stuff.
Also, does anybody know what the food factory is on the North Circular, less than a mile north of Hanger Lane? It smells vile.

As an aside, has anyone else noticed that when you're out on the bike, smells seem accentuated? I dont know if its the excercise or what, but the cycling past pubs can be almost irresitible!
Sadly, around here the smokers congregated at the pub doors ensure no beery smells escape unfiltered to the street.

I know that malty smell in East London - I used to work in that part of the world in the late 1970s and 80s after a while I seemed to get used to it. I never found where it came from.
Mrs FF worked at Tunnel Refineries in the late 80s where they made glucose syrups, probably from malted grain or Maize, but IIRC there was a Gin distillery, Gilbeys? nearby, and when the wind was in the right direction Mrs FFs car got covered in malty dust.

There was a basement wine bar in my university town. It was frequented by alarmingly beautiful foreign language students. Riddled by youthful angst I would shuffle by on the pavement above and smell the wine, the Gaulois smoke, and the expensive scent.
It smelled like Paradise.

IIRC the British Malt Vinegar factory is long gone, I went there as a student in 82.
Regarding the North Circular I think it's Katsouris fresh foods part of the Bakkavor group. I commissioned a continuous oven there some 15 years ago.
