No damage done except that he managed to crush my lunch. Caught the back of my bike. Van belongs to a local building company. I have written to the owner enclosing a copy of the video but no response to date.

Of course it was my fault for riding behand a van reversing into a main road. Hope the driver is not to traumised as it was my fault after all, he did not see me.

Oh you need to chill...............

Given the angle, and if you know the road....ease off........ the van was 90 to the road trying to get into a tiny gap.. before you passed.........

He wasn't helping either.............

Poor anticipation on your part in my opinion. I'd have slowed down considerably to see what he was going to do.

Contributory negligence?

Doubt it to be honest! you really need to know that road. Take a look on street view and you will see the parking is at a near 90degree angle. To me, knowing the road, it looks like he has parked up, why would he reverse?

This also forms part of Cycle Superhighway Route 3.

Faill to see the link between Narrow Street, Poplar that you've kindly provided the Street View of and South Street, St Andrews where the incident happened.

Parallel universe?

OK he didn't see you but his reversing lights were on. Why didn't you shout a warning or stop? In a van the driver's vision is severely limited and anything outside of a 180 degreee arc is difficult to see. Surely you know that as a commuter?

No, I agree with the others - chill a little and use some more common sense on the road. Vans and trucks have restricted vision, you need to look out for this things.

The van drives into the slanted space at 90 degrees and could well be reversing in order to park at the correct angle.

As a van driver in France i am all too aware that there is a zone (through which the OP cycled) that cannot be seen by the vehicle driver. This is because van's don't have rear passenger windows. Car parks can be a nightmare if you have no passenger to assist with reversing.

The OP may technically be correct to say it was the van driver's fault, I'd recommend he uses the road more defensively in future.

The glare from the low morning sun may have been a factor too. Also the hour of day (I'm assuming is early) could be taken into account; people sometimes don't expect to see others on the road at that time.

Personally, I'd have maybe taken a wider line around the back of the van (maybe even into the opposite carriage way as it was free) but not necessarily stopped... but that's a hindsight stuff and easy to say.

How did I contribute to the incident?

I passed the rear of a parked van and he reversed into me.

Why poor anticipation, the van belongs to a local builder and the van is parked very close to thier shop, given my local knowledge I expect the van to be parked in one of those spaces and I'm expecting to see the passengers door open.

Be fair, lad; screamy screamy in that girly manner did you no favours. If you get menaced by a careless nerk like that, cycle on or menace him back. You lose your cool, you lose the fight. Get on top of it, park your sense of self-righteous indignation and let the real man do the confronting. Can't do that, cycle on: can do that, do it.

I think that's in the bible. Or not. One or the other.

I kinda with Satans Budgie on this one. Sure he could have been further out, but seriously, if a van reverses into oncoming traffic, its not really his fault.

Well it's not his fault at all. What kind of blert would reverse without checking there was nothing behind him? But once it's happened, say more by saying less. In a gruffer tone.
