Having done my 35 mile round trip commute today, I finished at the running track where my son was training and my wife and I took the dog for a walk on the TPT in Penistone.

There we found a cyclist walking his bike. After a moments mandatory teasing it turned out his chain had broken. He was faced with a several mile walk to meet his friends.

Now, a few months ago I did a bike maintenance course (recycle bikes in Sheffield). One of the things they taught us was how to push a pin partway through to remove a link and fix a chain. I had my bike and Multi-tool handy. 10 mins later and happy cyclist pedals away up the track.

Well done!

People keep telling me that chains rarely break, but I have fixed broken ones for 5 or 6 other riders over the years ...

It amazes me how many people are put out of action by a broken chain when most of the time it's a five-minute fix with a chain tool and a joining link. Like the OP I've helped out several times, even on club runs.

used mine a few times, once 5 am freezing cold chain broke in the middle of nowhere (and it was dark) - fixed - got me to work...useful things to carry...

bought a new KMC Z7 recently.............came with joining link as before

instruction said '' insert but do not squeeze links.... just pedal and links will lock. NON-REUSABLE''

well that's frigging useful...in the bin -- and fitted another quick-link which was RE-USEABLE

I always have a Topeak Alien II tool with me for this purpose… and thank you for being a Gentleman of the Road by fixing him up :bicycle:

Gave me a warm glow for sure. As I was on my 10 speed I didn't have a spare master link with me, so had to very carefully push the pin through just enough to get the link out without falling out the other side, then rejoin by pushing it back through.

When I did the course I remember thinking I'd prefer to use a masterlink but paid attention and practised because "you never know when". Paid off for sure.

Never had a broken chain, nor helped anyone with one, but I've twice now had to shorten a chain for someone because their rear mech broke.

Good man RhythMick, you were the hero of the day!

As we got to the top of Hardnott Pass 15 miles into last years Coast to Coast in a Day sportive we were met by the sight of our mate Dave on the verge of tears - bike on the floor, and a length of broken chain held up. The look on his face was priceless when I pulled out a quick link and a chain tool.......

Almost wish I'd stopped to fix his bike now instead of shouting "should have brought these sucker!!" and whizzed off down the other side
